Kichijoji, Tokyo, Japan
Temple of Auspicious Omens: such the literal meaning of the three characters that spell out Kichijoji (吉祥寺), the suburban enclave of Japanese bohemia about 21km to the west of central Tokyo. The town has by now been named Japan’s most desired place of residence multiple times by several reputable surveys. Not quite mainstream but not partisan either of the caustic counterculture of Harajuku or Akihabara, the residents of Kichijoji embody a self-assured and discriminating curation of the dizzying plurality that is Japanese culture.
